West Los Angeles Dentistry Expert Enhances Patient Comfort with A/V Gear

Saturday, June 20, 2009 — LOS ANGELES — Seeing the probes, tubes, needles, and drills dentists use and hearing the drilling, scraping, and gurgling that come with even routine checkups can keep the hardiest individuals away from the dentist. However, at Dr. Neda Naim’s West Los Angeles dental office, patients don’t have to see, or hear, any of the treatment. Rather, thanks to audiovisual (A/V) i-glasses, patients can watch movies or television while in the dentist chair.
Manufactured by i-O Display Systems, Inc., i-glasses are head-mounted display video glasses that stream HD quality media. According to i-O Display Systems, two individual LCD screens offer crystal clear images to each eye for quality video viewing on a virtual theater screen equivalent to a 70-inch picture viewed from a distance of 13 feet. Also, the built-in stereo headphones allow patients to tune out treatment.

“We offer our patients i-glasses, which are placed over the patients eyes and they can view a variety of movies or shows during dental treatment,” said Dr. Naim “I decided to implement i-glasses for added patient comfort during treatment. Not only do patients seem to be calmer, some seem to enjoy sitting down and trying out this neat technology.”

According to a study by the American Dental Association (ADA), titled “Effects of Audiovisual Distraction During Dental Prophylaxis,” people avoid or delay dental care out of fear and anxiety. The ADA’s study polled and examined subjects to determine their individual apprehensions towards dental treatment. At random, the subjects received dental scraping and polishing with and without the variable, A/V eyeglasses. At the conclusion of treatment, subjects were given a post-treatment questionnaire.

Results from the questionnaire concluded that the patients were more comfortable while being treated with the A/V eyeglasses. Thus, the ADA has discovered that distraction is a proven method to alleviate anxiety during treatment. Furthermore, subsequent testing showed that video was a more powerful source of distraction than audio programming.

The ADA notes that some patients did not yield beneficial results from the A/V eyeglasses. According to their study, patients with high levels of anxiety did not test with positive results. Screening patients before administering distraction methods such as i-glasses was encouraged.

“Patients can use the i-glasses during long treatments or even routine cleanings,” said Dr. Naim, a West Los Angeles dentistry expert. “Patients are more relaxed and their minds are off the treatment. This helps appointments move along nicely.”

Other amenities at Dr. Naim’s practice include neck pillows, blankets, aroma therapy, and warm towels after treatment. Her philosophy as a dentist is to provide patients with comprehensive care in the most comfortable, pain-free environment possible, using cutting-edge equipment and a mixture of art and science.
